I am waiting for CSX 4990 to come across the ocean, then customs, Las Vegas, home. Then, the fun of SB-100. If you guys have any tips or tricks with SB-100 it would be greatly appreciated. I understand Shelby ran out of the 4000 numbers for fiberglass cars and is moving to CSX 6000.

Welcome aboard, Cobra25! Good to have you with us. Ron75 is the man to talk about your SB100. He lives in Cali and he will be able to tell you the ins and outs of that! ---------- "There is nothing nice about a Cobra. It's stripped down to the essentials, a big engine, a small car, and four wide tires to keep the whole business on the pavement. It's loud, smells like gasoline, and shakes, shudders, and bucks. It makes your arms tired and your feet hot. You nearly crash about once every 10 minutes. It's so damn wonderful that you can't believe it."

Cobra25, the 6000 Series is designated for the COB and COX cars. Where did you hear they would be the next 4000 series numbers. I have heard they would be using 5 diget numbers after CSX 4999, like 40,001. I guess we will know soon.

Cobra25, Depending on where you live in this republic, getting the SB-100 number will be easier or impossible. First off, find if there is a replica car friendly DMV office in your area. Then keep the paper work to the minimum required. There is a DMV Statement of Facts and Application For Registration Form that you will need to have filled out. The Memo is VR-2005-25. Also each DMV has a Memo from Sacramento telling them the steps, so if you get a clerk that knows nothing about it, tell them to read the memo. Make sure the DMV shows your car as a SPCNS. Also you will not be competing for one of 500 numbers. Each year anywhere from 50 to 200 numbers are already reserved by politicians and other people of power for their friends. Our own State AG reserved a block of 200 one year because some of his friends were having their titles pulled. Same for the specialty car makers such as Coddington was. Also get there early. Camp overnight if you have to. If you have any questions let me know and I can send you a copy of the bill or post whatever answers that you need. Best of all, talk to others in your area that have gone through this and they should know the best DMV office to use. Good luck and enjoy the car. Ron ---------- Ron Widener

Thanks for Posting the Pic's Cobra25! What a machine! It is interesting when it comes to the "skunk stripes" on a Cobra. I would never want them, yet I LOVE seeing them on other people's cars, go figure! I have 2 friends with Factory Five's. One is stripe delete, looks excellent! The other has the stripes with the fine pin stripes outside them.............. looks excellent! Go figure. I do not mean any disrespect to any Cobra and/or fan out there...but. These cars did not come with stripes. Back in the day only rarely would you see a 427 with stripes. Stripes were mainly Shelby Mustang domain. I love the strips on my 66 GT-350. They are right for that car.
I noticed today that its hard to find a Cobra without stripes. I am not trying to pretend this car is something its not. It just does'nt look right to me. Look at CSX 3018. I really like that car.

Cobra25, You are correct. All of the originals that I looked at when I was working down in L.A.and trying to find a 289 to buy were solid colors. I believe but am not positive that the stripes could be ordered at the dealers and they would install them. I also saw some 65 GT-350s that had no stripes. Just solid white. But the dealer would put the stripes on if you wanted. Ron ---------- Ron Widener

Perhaps I'm being overly sensitive- but I'm starting to percieve a bit of an elitist attitude presenting itself here over the last few days. This kind of attitude will change this site so it will be like those which people were complaining about only a few weeks/months back. All this talk about "how the originals were painted," and how "one engine looks so much more "authentic" than another"..... Let's face it probably none of our cars are originals, and even the new Superformance cars are not "original Cobras," and not being built by Shelby if I understand correctly, so...... I'm starting to feel as though I ought to apologize for owning a "striped" Cobra- and just a "replica" at that! I have no problem with anyone trying to build their Cobra and staying to what they feel is "true to their impression? of the original"- but I think this thread and some others before it are starting to go over the top- for me anyway.... The fact that you say you are not trying to offend anyone or their car does not make it go down any better- in fact it emphasises the fact of your prejudice. Perhaps I should ask the owner of this forum to take the photos of my "crummy striped replica, with it's unauthentic engine" off the site so as not to further offend any purists??? Devils Advocate......

I don't think it was meant as an elitist attitude, just how they personally feel on the subject. My view is that these were meant to be race cars, and race cars are continuously improved, modified, and customized to fit the owner and driver. So to me the striped cars, replicas, and "not true to original" cars are the embodiment of the original cars. If you kept it all original, then you were out of the spirit/embodiment. Make the car yours. Make it what you see as the perfect car. Then you are keeping the spirit alive. To me the Purist attitude is the opposite of what was the original spirit of racing/hot rodding.

Thanks JOE- that's exactly the kind of thought that encourages growth and cameraderie- what we need in "hot-rodding"..... It's often been said that those early cars were often built from whatever happened to be laying around at the time of construction- kind of leaves the interpretation of authentic up to the individual I'd say... Guess I'll leave my pics up for now..... :<)

Dobe Bob, If you will look at the pictures of my Cars in the members section you will see than neither of them ever remotely resemble an original. I just stated that the originals never had stripes from SAI. That is so, but I built my car intentionally to not be confused with an original. I think anyone that builds or gets one should get what they want. Sorry if you took my post to be an elitist as that is the farthest thing from what I am. Also having spent time at SAI in the 60s trying to buy a 289 which no one would part with back then, I can tell you from personal experience that the originals were not all the same. Shelby just used whatever parts he could get at the time and he was more interested in racing than building cars to sell, hence the small number of originals. He had to have so many to get them certified. I even saw some with two different brands of gages in them. Ron ---------- Ron Widener

Dobe, Glad to see that you are sticking around. I always try to take what ever is typed as positive as I have no way of knowing the authors intent behind the words. If time proves me wrong, then I will say something. Like I said, I feel that the spirit is constant customization making no 2 cars the same. Someone else may have seen an original right off the showroom floor, that is the car they have always wanted and will do anything to duplicate that exact car, because it is the embodiment of the spirit to them. I think it is just as important to the hobby as I think it is important to know where you came from to know where you are going. That is the reason I love this site and continue to visit. There is a great time line of history here.
