Bruce,

The other two books that are to big for the scanner are two of the best I think ever written about the Cobras. One is "Shelby Cobra," by Dave Friedman and it has the picture of Steve McQueen at Shelby's with his Cobra. The other is "AC Cobra" by Rinsey Mills and it has the famous picture of the Daytona Coupe with the Bob Boundrant for Prsident Sticker on it. I may try later today to see if I can take a picture of them with the camera and get it to come out any good.

Good stuff, Ron! I know what you mean about some of the books and articles being too big to scan. My scanner can only handle 8.5 x 11.5, any bigger than that, and I have to get my better half to take it to work. As a side note, how are things down there? I see the damage the fires have caused and the over all temp is always in the three diget range! Gotta be nasty! Hang in there!

Bruce,

It was kind of bad for a day or so but is better now. The air is clearing some from the smoke.
Neither of the two books you pictured above are ones that I have. And the only book store that we usd to have there that you could depend on to look for and order anything went out of business several years ago.

It sounds like things are getting a little better. Good stuff! I have to be honest here, my better half gets most of the books for me on ebay. We just picked up a shipment of them, lots of books and mags.

Bruce,

I have had the Deluxe Leather covered edition of the new registry ordered for almost two years now. I contacted Rick some time back and he said they want to send it to the printers late this year. For some unknown reason the printer they had planned to use just closed up. My letter from SCCA states that I will get Edition # 112.

Edit: I just went to their site and they are now saying the new registry may be out in December.

I have the Friedman, the Wyss, and the Mills books. I recommend them all. Wallace takes a lot of poop over at CC (not sure why) but I like his books. That particular one should have been better proof read before going to print, but he offers/shares a lot of information not found elsewhere. I really enjoyed reading it.

Rinsey Mills book is excellent, especially once you get past all the "proper English" references to "wings" & "boots," etc.. Great photography in there too! I have another of his books on the way to me right now. However, I did find his "restoration" book to be a big disappointment. Right now it fetches up to $500 a copy, but I say save your money. I think the only reason it's commanding such a high price is because there's an S/C on its cover. Once you get inside it's like most all the other books where the 427 takes a back seat to the earlier cars. I had it, read it, then sold it & didn't even bother to copy anything out of it.

Dave,

I don't have the Wyss book and we don't have any book stores around here any more since Dalton's closed a couple of years ago that will look up and order anything for you. I have a few Ford Performance Books that have a page or so on Cobras and Shelby Mustangs, but nothing worth getting just for them. They are good books though as they cover the complete Fore High Performance line of vehicles over the years.

A lot of Cobra books are out of print, but they can all be found eventually. Ebay is a great source, especially if you're patient. I just got Friedmans Cobra Racing History book for $35 and it has sold for a much as $200!

Photobucket

Bruce's Brock Daytona Coupe book is by far the most expensive book out there fetching as much as $2000 per copy! Lucky dog! :)

Other good sources for books are Barnes & Noble (bn.com) and Amazon.com. They both offer used books through approved outside vendors and there are often some great deals to be found. I check them on a regular basis. Also, overstock.com has a few Cobra books too, so it's worth checking out as well.

The Mills book I was referring to earlier is this one:

Photobucket

Unless someone wants it as an investment, save your money. It's just not as promising as the cover suggests. As they say, don't judge a book by its cover. :) There is a copy in an Ebay store right now for $544! I bought my copy for $100 (Ebay) & sold it for $200 easily!

Trevor Legate has written several books on the Cobra. Sadly, I've only been able to aquire one of them so far:

Photobucket

This is a huge heavy table book with lots of juicy beautiful pictures, is well written, and has a lot of great stories in it; like one about Phil Spector, the neurotic/cooky record producer, who owned an original Daytona coupe and was often the target of the law when he would terrorize the streets of Hollywood with that car. Under the advise of his lawyer he eventually had to quit driving it or lose his license. It's great stuff! Legate may be doing a 427 book! I'm keeping my fingers crossed. :)

Dave, my better half got that Daytona book for me. It is in brand new condition, still in it's sleave and autographed. Pete Brock sent me an email, giving me a heads up about his book. My Better Half, found it on ebay and ordered it for me. You are right, I am a lucky guy! I have some others, I will scan and post too. I got the Legate book for $65.

Have you read the "Cobra in the barn" & "Just call me Carroll" books yet? How are they?

Bruce,

Thanks for the info on Mclellan's book. I found a "like new" copy on Amazon for $5.00. I have The Cobra Story also, but a later edition, I think. It has a different dust jacket. Also, I noticed a paperback version of this on Ebay called The Carroll Shelby Story (same book) which I had never seen. It's up to $10+ already, so while at Amazon I looked and found one for $5.00. I bought it just out of speculation.

I'll post more books later.

Cheers,

Dave -

More Books!

Here are a couple worth having. Wyss's "Shelby's Wildlife" and "AC Heritage" by Simon Taylor. The Wyss book is starting to get a little pricy and the other is not too bad.

Photobucket

Here's my copy of "The Cobra Story" and Friedmans "Carroll Shelby's Racing Cobra." The first book is still readily available, the other is not. Mine is a retired library copy that I got a decent price on. It's rarity drives up it's price. Both are "must haves."

Photobucket

I received my copy of "Shelby American Racing History" by Dave Friedman yesterday and read it last night. Like the rest of his books it's mostly captions and pictures. There are several previously unpublish photos in this book including some 427 shots and a series of 9 Daytona build pictures. Unfortunately, to me at least, Friedman does not care for the 427, and it's easy to see why he has no interest in doing a book about them. "I have always had a hard time trying to understand the mystique that certain people have tried to attach to these cars' supposed "illustrious racing history." Though he does say it was "a truly awesome street machine.." I guess it's ALL about the racing for Friedman.

Photobucket

The first book here is another, of many, compilation book. There are several good articles, but like many of these, do not expect great pictures. There are a lot, but the quality is pretty poor. The other book is basically a 'kid's' book on Cobras.

Photobucket

Another compilation..

Photobucket

Lastly, another Freidman book on the GT40's. Great pictures & captions.

Cool! I'm gunna have to check that out.

I'm just about finished with Mclellan's book. It's very good and has a decent amount of new pictures for me, though it is long on the early AC History. It's a real bargin used ($5-10), especially when you consider his other book sells for around $100+,if you can find it.

After much patience I finally managed to get a copy of the Cobra Ferrari Wars at a good price - A first edition too! Even at the regular price this book is worth every penny IMO. I am about to the end & it has been an excellent read that is hard to put down. It offers a lot of insight you won't find anywhere else including information on our beloved CSX3000 cars. A must have!

I have some new books to post, including the above Shelby Cars in Detail - which is very nice (and expensive). If you can find a good copy, Bill Carroll's, Ford Cobra Guide is excellent. I believe it was only published as a paperback ($2.95) & now they're $50-60! But, it's packed with information you won't find anywhere else and also includes two interviews with the great Ken Miles - Jolly good stuff!

Speaking of Ken Miles, the book on him by Art Evans is worth reading. Although it does have one huge flaw, which is CS's vile comments about Pete Brock and the Daytona coupe. These days he is just getting harder and harder to swallow.

Pic's to follow..

I have that book "Shelbys Wildlife". When you say a little pricey, what's the going rate?

I also have a magazine from Winter 95 titled "Cobras High Performance Automotive Legends" Vol 3 No 1
It's the only one I've ever seen, so I presume the publisher went under. Either that or nobody brings tbem into Canada..

I own two of the Dave Friedman, Peter Brock, George Stauffer books "Daytona Cobra Coupes". I intend to sell one of these books - which give probably the best insight view of the Shelby team. Remember, Pete was the first to join the team - even before the Cobra enterprise happend. He was employee of Carroll“s driving school before the first Shelby Cobra was built!
