I'll start with the smallest first. I'm not exactly sure of the scale, but I'd guess around 1/100 - 1/120.

These are Micro Machines made years ago. According to the Micro Machine Museum (go figure..)there were about a dozen versions each of the GT40, the Cobra, and the Daytona.

Photobucket

Photobucket

The deluxe versions have working doors, etc..
Photobucket

Just for a sense of scale, here's one with a 1/12 GMP car.

Photobucket

These aren't the smallest either! Micro Machines made an even smaller version called the Micro Mini. I haven't been able to find any yet, but here's a picture of one:

Photobucket

All these cars are getting very difficult to find. There's currently an Ebay store with a couple listed, but they hardly ever come up for auction.

Enjoy,

Dave-

Cool stuff, Dave! I will have to try and get my AFX Cobras, Daytonas and GT40s out. End up filling up these pages with cool pics! Good stuff!

It's stripped down to the essentials, a big engine, a small car, and four wide tires to keep the whole business on the pavement. It's loud, smells like gasoline, and shakes, shudders, and bucks. It makes your arms tired and your feet hot. You nearly crash about once every 10 minutes. It's so damn wonderful that you can't believe it."

I'll have to take a picture of my Hot Wheels Daytona Coupe. It is one of the ones that has way out of proportion rear wheels. Other than that I just have a few other Hot Wheels that I have kept and a bunch of Mustangs in display cases throughout the house.

Nice cars. I have the EXOTO Collection of the 6 Daytona Coupes that took aver two years to get. Then for the people who got the whole set they sent us a free polished stainless steel one. These are in 1/18th scale. Also have the 1/18th scale of the first Cobra made and it has the hand painted EXO-260-1 on the valve covers. I must have 400 die casts and many of the Cobras and Shelby Mustangs. Most of the less desirable ones are stored in computer boxes in the garage attic. I saw where the set of Daytona Coupes that was issued back then is now worth about 6 times what I had to give. If they would just inflate up to the price of the original real ones I would be tempted to sell a couple.

Not nearly as nice as Dave's collection, but here are the few that I have. Mostly all Mustangs, but I have just added a Cobra to the mix. All of the cars in the cases are models that you assemble and have Die Cast bodies.

Thanks. That Mach 1 is by far the most detailed. I forget the maker of the kit, but it is the only one I have from that maker and it is very nicely detailed. The Daytona is a Hot Wheels. I like the over sized rims and tires. Kinda gives it that rat fink feel. I just picked up the Cobra yesterday. It is not detailed at all, but it looks good in the case. I didn't realize it but it is one that you pull back and let go to zoom across the floor, but mounted it anyway.

I like the ones that I put together. I used to do a lot of plastic models and I got to a point where I was getting into the finite details customizing each one. I ended up quitting them when I moved from San Diego because we do not have a hobby shop that is as good as the one out there. I could get anything I could think of there. I don't like ordering online, so I just get these when I find one I don't have.

The Mach 1 does look really detailed. I didn't notice the rims on the Daytona, but now that you mention it, the tires look like a low profile kind too. Pretty cool!

Love the for sale one. I really am considering getting back into model building. I used to detail them like that. Sometimes it is fun to represent the real world instead of the perfect car every time. A tip to simulate rock damage is to spray a primer, put some tiny rocks or even kitty litter on the front after it is dry and spray the color over it. Once the paint gets tacky but not yet dry, remove the rocks. You will see the primer underneath and it gives the effect of road and/or race damage. You can also cut and use tape for larger areas.

Thanks for the tip, Joe. I would have never thought of that. It comes at a good time too. I'm thinking about re-doing one of my Daytona's to look like the Bonneville car.

Well if you use the tape idea to make it look like large sections of paint are missing(like the for sale Cobra), remember to shape the tape to exactly how you want he peeled paint to look, let the paint completely dry and use an razor knife to cut the paint on the tape edge before removing it. That way also gives you that paint edge that happens from rock damage.

If anyone has not seen this before, it's a 1/12 Franklin Mint Pewter Daytona. If anyone is considering buying one - NOW IS THE TIME! I think the market has bottomed out. I've been tracking these for quite a while and there is a seller on Ebay at the moment who's letting them go for $359.00 & shipping. Retail is $1000 and only 1000 were made. This thing is solid pewter with the exception of the windows and rubber tires, and I swear it must weigh 25+lbs! As an investment, I don't think anyone could lose money on these at this point. It comes with a base with a little plaque. I'm going to see if I can ship the base over to Brock for his signature.

I am not sure on the salt spray. I have never done one like that. For sure you need an air brush that can spray fine particles and use a light paint. I would think for the best effect, you would want to do a few coats very lightly. Most of my modeling techniques were ones I picked up through trial and error. Get some sand paper and you can sand the paint down to cover up a mistake, but you have to be careful as it can easily sand off plastic.

Thanks, Joe. I'll see if I can pick up an inexpensive air brush and experiment on something first. Since the salt spray is kinda dirty, I thought maybe I'd try some light gray with white over it. I'll experiment a little and figure out something. Geez, I used to build models all the time when I was a kid and playing with this makes me feel young again. Who knows, maybe I'll discover some hidden talent :)

Just another thought for you Dave.

You could also try some White Corn starch and put a little dirt in it. Run it through a flour sifter and you will get multiple shades out of it. Paint the car and lightly dust the corn starch mixture over it. I would assume it would look best with more at the bottom.

One of my favorite cars is this GMP 1/12 Ken Miles USRRC Cobra. The details are insane. Working latches, gas cap, shifter, knock-offs, leathers seats, a Miles Helmet & googles, and it goes on.. The prices on these dropped significantly a month or so ago & are climbing back up, but you can still get one from the series at a good price if you're patient.
