According to my research, CSX 3102 is a rebodied CSX 3005. Ron (Computerworks) from CC makes this claim. Note the scoops and venting. Also the shape of the roll bar is different. Curious, it would have bumpers and not quick jacks. I don't know the facts behind this story, and if anyone does, I would appreciate hearing from them. The only thing I can think of, is, maybe CSX 3005 was wrecked or damaged and was rebuilt with the CSX No. 3102.
The following is an update on the history of these two cars, supplied by the current owner. My thanks to Bill Jones, for bringing us up to date on this special Cobra.
"My brother and I have owned the Cobra since 1970. We purchased it from a man in San Jose, Ca., and have done little to it except for waxing and changing the tires. It is pretty much original as we received it, having 6900 miles on it then, now with a little more than 14,500 miles.
3102 was sold in Minnesota in 1966. The owner wrecked the car and died in the accident. The Insurance company sold the Cobra to a man in Iowa, a SCCA race driver. He knew Shelby, called and asked if he had any new body panels. Shelby told him that he had a complete body for sale for $1000.00, plus shipping. The chassis to this body, 3005, and a special motor were sold to a wealthy Japanese businessman who wanted to build a race car of his own design. This chassis disappeared for more than 30 years and recently turned up at Mike McCloskey`s shop for complete restoration.
The body for 3005 with the modification, scoops, larger fenders, vents in the trunk lid and around rear lights was sold to the man in Iowa. He never finished mating the two and sold it to a man living in Louisiana, who completed the job and used to drag race the Cobra at tracks near New Orleans. The Cobra was sold in the late 60`s to another auto enthusiast in California. My brother had placed an ad in a magazine simply stating WANTED: 427 Cobra, good condition. The man from San Jose called and we ended up buying the Cobra, sight unseen, except for some photos and had it shipped to Virginia. And as the saying goes, the rest is history.
3005 was supposed to have been raced at La Mans as a factory sponsored car to have been driven by Bob Johnson. With the modification finished, Ford decided to use the GT 40`s instead of the Cobra`s because the closed cars would be able to reach higher speeds than the open Cobra`s." (Apr. '08)
Very interesting story Bill. Please accept my thanks on bringing us up to date on this car!
